Costly Spikenard

June 9, 2024

John 12:4 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Our pastor, Dean Jones taught such a humbling, sweet message of humility through the love and adoration of Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus.  The wonderful truth of Mary's tears and her hair was the depth of her humility and gratitude for Jesus Christ.   Judas Iscariot thought what a waste of such costly oil to just wipe the dirt and grime off of the feet of Jesus.  What is the cost that we are willing to pay to sit at the feet of Jesus?   There is a scripture that states that a woman's hair is her glory:

1 Corinthians 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

As Pastor Dean, pointed out with such passion, she took her "glory" and "wipe the dirty feet of Jesus".  Judas scorned her for such waste, Jesus's reply to Judas's scorn was "Let her alone".   Such a beautiful picture of true humility.  When we humble ourselves with such costly sacrifice for His pleasure, the aroma of our humility goes before the Lord and fills His Throne Room with humility's essence. Do we not desire to also worship and anoint the feet of our Lord with such gratitude and true humility?
